Metals must be measured in both the pool water, and the fill water, because PHMB is destroyed by metals such as iron or copper. In a a chlorinated pool, often only pH levels + chlorine levels are measured, since chlorine is a santizer AND an algaecide AND an oxidizer. By contrast, PHMB is ONLY a sanitizer. The algaecide function is provided by special compatible algaecide; the oxidizer function is provided by peroxide. Thus, measuring PHMB + peroxide + algicide levels is the equivalent of measure ONLY chlorine, in a chlorinated pool.
